Background

Selecting the best Christmas movies is a daunting task. The sheer number of films to review is overwhelming, and the debate between the charm of classic films versus the humor of modern comedies is never-ending. Our list includes a mix of classics, contemporary hits, and some unexpected picks that you might not consider. These movies embody the warmth of the holiday season, evoke fond memories, and provide plenty of festive fun. See if you agree with our choices, which are not ranked in any particular order.

Our list features classic, contemporary, and some you probably would not choose if you were creating your very own list. These movies are fun to watch and they represent the warmth of the holiday season. They also bring back fond memories of people in our lives so see if you agree with our choices. The movies are not ranked in any order.

The movie that our Team watches every year, and sometimes more than twice, is Christmas With the Kranks.

Summary: This film follows Luther and Nora Krank as they decide to skip Christmas altogether until a last-minute change of heart leads to a frantic attempt to pull together a holiday celebration.

The movie that started the tradition of family Christmas movies, Holiday Inn, is indisputably, one of Bing Crosby’s best movies of all time. What else can be said about a movie that features the song, White Christmas? We think this is a movie you will want to watch in the summer just to remind you of special this decade was.

Summary: Featuring Bing Crosby, this classic film introduced the song “White Christmas.” It tells the story of Jim Hardy, who opens an inn that only operates on holidays and falls in love with a talented performer.

An underrated movie that brings great memories of growing up in the late 1980s is, Prancer.

Summary: This underrated gem from the late 1980s tells the heartwarming story of a young girl who believes she has found one of Santa’s reindeer and sets out to nurse it back to health in time for Christmas.

Our next choice is an adaption of Dr. Seuss’s classic holiday tale, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Jim Carrey is at his zany best and of course, we could not have picked a better ending.

Summary: In this live-action adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s classic tale, Jim Carrey stars as the Grinch, who plots to steal Christmas from the Whos of Whoville, only to discover the true spirit of the holiday.

If we had to choose a movie to be at the top of our list, it would be Jack Frost. The movie is not entirely believable, it has average special effects but it represents a truly special message for Christmas. Michael Keaton is the father who is too busy to be with his son as he is a musician in a touring band. One evening, on his way to meet up with his family for Christmas Eve, he is involved in a fatal car accident. What follows is a light hearted and the magical reunion between Keaton and his son, Charlie. This is a can’t miss movie and one you will remember for a long time.

Summary: Michael Keaton stars as a musician who tragically dies in a car accident but returns as a snowman to make amends with his son. This movie delivers a magical and heartwarming message about family and second chances.

Perhaps our next movie is truly the one that will keep you laughing beyond December 25th. We are referring to the one and only, Christmas Vacation. We all have family members similar to Clark Griswold’s and his over the top relatives. If this is the only movie you have time to watch this Christmas, we highly recommend it.

Summary: This hilarious film follows Clark Griswold and his family as they navigate the chaos of the holiday season. From unexpected guests to over-the-top decorations, this comedy keeps the laughs coming.

If you can only one two movies this holiday season, add this one as your other choice along with Christmas Vacation. The original Home Alone is a great choice but we think that Home Alone 2, Lost in New York is the most entertaining of the 3 movie franchise.

Summary: In this sequel, Kevin McCallister is once again separated from his family, this time ending up in New York City. With a mix of heart and humor, he outsmarts the Wet Bandits while experiencing the city’s festive magic.

Our next choice is a movie that we did not have any great hope that we would enjoy it. The Christmas Chronicles, starring Kurt Russell, was a visual and cinematic adventure.

Summary: Starring Kurt Russell as a modern and charming Santa Claus, this Netflix film follows two siblings who team up with Santa to save Christmas after crashing his sleigh.

Our next choice is another Netflix movie that surprised us. Last Christmas is a humble but surprisingly entertaining movie featuring Emilia Clarke. Whether or not you saw the ending coming, the movie is charming and it features a positive holiday message. We expect this from this genre and this one does not disappoint.

Summary: Featuring Emilia Clarke, this film is a touching and unexpectedly profound holiday movie. It follows the story of a young woman who finds new meaning in life and love during the Christmas season.

No favourite holiday movie list can exclude one of the best movies of all time, It’s A Wondeful Life. For many families, this is a Christmas Eve staple and it features an uplifting message of hope.

Summary: This timeless classic tells the story of George Bailey, a man who gets a second chance to see the impact of his life on others, guided by his guardian angel. Its message of hope and redemption makes it a perennial favorite.

The Waltons Christmas movie, which was also the pilot for the TV series, The Homecoming is another classic that we think you will enjoy.

Summary: This film, which served as the pilot for the TV series “The Waltons,” captures the essence of family and tradition as it tells the story of a family’s Christmas during the Great Depression.

This next movie is perhaps the most difficult one to watch. It features the true life story of a young boy who is stricken by leukemia and how his family and friends provide much needed love and support.

Summary: The Heart of Christmas is an emotionally gripping film inspired by the true story of the Locke family. The movie centers on Austin and Julie Locke, whose lives are turned upside down when their young son, Dax, is diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. As they navigate the challenges and heartache of his illness, they find an unexpected source of hope and community.

This next movie on our list has two versions available. The original 1947 version is a timeless classic and the 1994 release stands beside the original as a worthy remake.

Summary: Both the original 1947 version and the 1994 remake of this film are cherished holiday classics. The story of a department store Santa who claims to be the real thing is a delightful and touching exploration of the holiday spirit.

We can’t leave this topic without including a Hallmark movie, The FC Team believes that the movie that represents the positive message of family, romance, and love is Christmas in Evergreen.

Summary: Allie Shaw, a veterinarian, is leaving her beloved hometown of Evergreen to start a new life in Washington, D.C. However, a snowstorm strands her in town, where she meets Ryan Bellamy and his daughter.

One last choice is the Disney original, The Santa Clause. While the other sequels provide great family watching, Tim Allen’s portrayal of Santa Claus was new and fresh The story line was well written and it was an excellent adventure for movie watchers of all ages.

Summary: The Santa Clause is a beloved Christmas comedy that follows the story of Scott Calvin (played by Tim Allen), a divorced father and successful toy company executive who inadvertently becomes the new Santa Claus.

These films are just a few of our favorites, each offering something special for the holiday season. Whether you prefer the nostalgia of classics or the humor of contemporary hits, there’s something on this list for everyone to enjoy. Let us know what you think!
